On December 31, 2009, the Chapter made a donation to two local animal shelters.
The first one was to Mylestone Equine Rescue which is owned and managed by Susan Kelly and her husband Bruce Thompson. This Rescue is home to 32 horses and 3 mini's. Many have suffered abuse and neglect at the hand of previous owners which have left both physical and emotional scars. It takes a great deal of time, love and patience to help these animals learn to trust again, however some never fully recover. The Rescue allows them to live out the rest of their days in a safe and peaceful environment.
In an effort to support to the community, the Rescue has a program in which special needs students in the area come and help care for the horses. Both the students and horses enjoy this time together. The Rescue also takes some of the horses to community events during the warmer weather to help raise awareness of these special animals. They receive no financial assistance from the State. The Rescue is run strictly by donations.
They have a website and newsletter that provides more information about the rescue and some of the different horses on the Rescue. It is www.mylestone.org. The second shelter is located on the outskirts of Easton and is known as the Center for Animal Health and Welfare. Upon visiting the center we found 2 very large rooms that house the adult cats. The rooms are called free roaming. There are no cages in these rooms – only bookshelves with pillows, cat beds, cat trees and other items for the cats to curl up in.
According to the workers at the center they have found that this environment is less stressful for the cats than keeping them in cages. The kittens are kept in a separate room in large cages that have ample toys to keep them busy, yet safe. The dogs are located on the lower level of the Center in individual pens. The pens are set up so each dog has both an inside and outside area. The center is very clean and the animals are well cared for.
